Meet Adeyinka
When Adeyinka “Yinka” received the life-changing gift of a double transplant, his sister Demi stood faithfully by his side as his primary caregiver. The two siblings, who live in Brooklyn, had already been through so much together, but the weeks following surgery brought an unexpected challenge.
Just days before Yinka was to be discharged from the hospital, Demi discovered mold under his kitchen sink caused by an old leak. With Yinka about to begin powerful immunosuppressive medications, returning home to that environment was out of the question. “I remembered what the pharmacist told us about his weakened immune system,” Demi recalls. “There was no way we could risk it.”
Thanks to the nonprofit’s patient support grant, the family was able to secure temporary housing while the repairs were underway. “Your support gave us peace of mind,” Demi says. “It meant we could focus on Yinka’s recovery without the fear of him getting sick from something preventable.”
Today, the kitchen is safe again, and Yinka continues to regain his strength. One of the first visitors to see him after his transplant was Brian, his former home dialysis nurse—proof of the deep bonds formed throughout his medical journey.
Demi also expressed her gratitude to Amanda Hefferman at Mount Sinai, who connected them to the nonprofit’s resources at exactly the right time. “We are so thankful—for Amanda, for Brian, and for the kindness of everyone who made this possible,” Demi shares. “This support changed our story.”
From Yinka, Demi, and their entire family: thank you for helping families like ours navigate the most difficult moments with hope and dignity.
